一個人在荒野中，同伴的拋棄，惡劣的自然環境，以及那匹隨時都會將自己吞噬的病狼……一切的一切，在他那頑強的求生欲面前又是多么的微不足道？一個人掙扎著，抱著對生的希望。他是恐懼死亡的吧，也許。最近的'這幾年，隨著成長的腳步，不斷的聽說有人因為各種各樣的原因而輕生，確實，我不理解他們是受到了怎么樣的打擊或是困擾，能夠讓他們選擇死亡，選擇這個放棄一切，選擇這個最不負責任也是最怯懦和逃避的方式。

文中有三次寫到他對金沙的處理。第一次他把金沙從鹿皮口袋里倒下一半，然后把它包好，埋好后還做上記號以便出去后回來再取。第二次他把所剩的金沙又倒掉一半，但這一次是直接倒掉，雖然有些不舍，他還是依然選擇了放棄。第三次他把剩下的金沙連同鹿皮口袋一同扔了，這一次顯得是那樣的堅決，義無反顧。
人對金錢的追求本是無可厚非的，因為人要在這個社會中生存還離不開錢。但是如果我們為了錢而不顧一切，像淘金者的同伴比爾一樣，不但拋棄了同伴，致死也沒舍得丟掉那袋金沙，結果往往會使得其反，丟了性命。
現在社會上有一部分人對金錢的追求簡直到了瘋狂的地步。他們為了錢不惜利用各種卑鄙的手段，坑蒙拐騙偷，攔路搶劫，殺人劫貨。很多人因此進了監獄，被送上刑場。
大家都知道生命是寶貴的，無論有多大的誘惑，遇到多大的困難，我們首先要保住自己的生命，只要生命存在，其他的還可以重新獲取，如果丟掉了生命，那一切都不復存在了。
勇敢的戰勝困難，努力向前，熱愛生活，熱愛生命，珍惜我們眼前的時光，前面一定會有一個更加廣闊的天地。

信仰是心靈最好的朋友。他顯然被比爾拋棄了，可是他沒有放棄對朋友的信任，他相信，比爾會在前面等他，他們會合后，可以結伴南行，遠離寒冷的北方。這種信仰，支持著他邁著疲憊的步伐繼續前行。這對他而言，是生的希望。
饑餓是身體最大的'敵人。在體力透支的情況下，他努力吞咽著又苦又辣的漿果、燈芯草根、生魚、活的小松雞、野獸吃剩的碎骨頭，只要是能補充體力的東西，他都吃，因為，保存體力才能生存下去，這是再簡單不過的道理。
當金子成為負擔時，舍棄是一種智慧。金子曾經是淘金人絢麗的夢想，然而，此時卻成為疲憊不堪的淘金人的負擔。繼續背負金子前行，只能走向死亡。舍棄它，才能走得更遠。比爾至死沒有扔掉淘來的金子，所以等待他的是死亡。而淘金人睿智地分批扔掉了金子，也就扔掉了負擔，輕裝前行，走向生命。
野獸是巨大的、可怕的。大棕熊在淘金人昂揚的生命的咆哮中退卻了，饑餓的大灰狼在他可怕的耐心中倒下了，并為他注入了活的血液。
他活下來了。到底是什么讓他活下來了？是對生的渴望，對生命的不放棄和熱愛，使他最終走出了生命的困境，煥發生命！
